The productive struggle is the sweet spot of learning: the zone just beyond what a student can already do, where a problem is hard enough to demand real thinking but not so hard that they shut down. Psychologists call it desirable difficulty: durable learning comes from effortful retrieval and productive mistakes, not from watching a worked example feel easy.

A student in the zone pauses, frowns, then tries something—they are reaching. A student who has fallen out goes silent, guesses randomly, copies without understanding, or gives up.

Not all wrong answers are the same. Knowing why a student got it wrong is the whole game: each type needs a different response.
Right method, wrong arithmetic or sign. Spot it when the working is inconsistent and the student fixes it instantly when asked to recheck. Slow down, estimate first, and check the answer is reasonable.
A faulty mental model—for example, “multiplying always makes bigger.” Spot it when the student is confident but consistently wrong. Confront it with a counterexample and rebuild the idea.
The student knows the concept but loses the steps when solving equations, using long division, or rearranging. Rebuild with worked steps and short fluency practice until the routine is automatic.
The student answers a different question. Spot correct maths aimed at the wrong target. Underline command words and restate what is actually being asked before starting.
Today's topic fails because an earlier skill is missing—fractions under algebra, or place value under decimals. Trace back, close the root gap, then return.
The student knows the maths but loses credit through hidden working, poor time management, or rounding too early. Practise under timing and make the reasoning visible.
